Pakistan Shopping: The ultimate guide to the best ready-to-wear pants, palazzos and shalwars

Ayesha Somaya embroidered formal trousers
With shorter shirts, worked pants are coming into their own - this pretty pair by Ayesha Somaya are available at theit store

If you’re serious about fashion, you have to love the shift away from three-piece joras. Once the retail sector realized that customers would buy just kurtas, they stopped bothering with complete suits and it’s actually great not to get lumbered with a matching shalwar and slapdash tie’n’dye dupatta. While it’s a relief to escape the tyranny of the matchy-matchy three-piece, shopping off-the-rack has become a bit of a challenge.

Pakistani Bridal Wear - the best 6 collections from PFDC L'Oreal Bridal Week (PLBW) 2014

Pakistan Fashion Design Council's Bridal Fashion Week sponsored by L'Oreal is one of the fashion highlights of the year. PLBW 2014 saw some exceptional bridal fashion but a handful of designers stood head and shoulders above the rest. Their collections were well conceived, creative, elaborately crafted and simply beautiful. Here are my personal favourites from PFDC’s bridal fashion week, in no particular order.

Nomi Ansari

Nomi Ansari’s is known for his skilled use of colour. His Gul collection was colourful, as expected, but also featured a notable level of variety and sophistication. With this collection Ansari dialed back the saturation of his colours for a palette that was vibrant yet refined.

Win a 24 Carat Gold Kerastase Spa Treatment - Blog giveaway

It’s competition time! We love giveaways at Karachista and this one’s a doozy! One lucky winner will have the chance to join me for 24 carat gold Kerastase treatment at a top salon here in Karachi. Entering is ridiculously simple – just answer the following question:

You can enter by commenting below or on Karachista’s Facebook page or even on my Instagram. The competition closes on Thursday 23rd October at 6pm. The winner will be chosen via a lucky draw and will be announced on the official Kerastase Facebook page on Friday 24th October at 3pm.

I've found Kerastase treatements make my dry, frizzy  hair noticeably softer and more manageable. Friends with fine or oily hair are also major fans of different products in the range. I’m so excited to have the chance to meet one of you and share this lovely treat with you. Thanks Kerastase!

This competition is now closed. Congratulations to the winner Laiba Khan who won after entering on Karachista's Facebook page

Tapal Green Tea flavours tested - Morocccan Mint is the winner

Green Tea - pure relaxation in a cup

I have to admit I'm passionate about tea - my automatic response to any crisis is to put the kettle on. That's what comes of spending most of your life in either England or Pakistan. But I'm not a fan of what passes for 'normal' tea in either country. I never really got the hang of Pakistani chai - stewed in a saucepan with milk and poured steaming into a cup or glass. The odd cup, sweetly spiced with cardomom is ok, but it's generally too cloying for my taste. I used to drink 'British" tea - in a mug, strongly brewed from a teabag with a splash of milk added - perfect with a KitKat to dunk - but no more. A few years back I switched to green tea and since then have never really liked the taste of black tea with milk.

Proper tea buffs will tell you that milk in tea is sacrilege anyway - and I'm getting to see what they mean - but personally it's green tea not black that floats my boat. I have to admit that I'm experimenting with matcha teas, loose leaf jasmine tea, white tea and the like but for convenience, am quite happy to dunk a teabag. So I was glad to be asked to try Tapal's relaunched green teas.

I found the taste a little thin at first but this was mostly fixed by brewing for a little longer than I do for my usual Twinings teabags. The Elaichi tea was nowhere near as good as you can make by simply adding an empty cardomom pod to your cup but the Moroccan Mint is a winner - it's great as a no-fuss after-dinner 'kava'.

I won't comment on the Lemon version - I've yet to find a lemon green tea that tastes nice - the Twinings one actually tastes soapy to me. You're much better off squeezing some fresh lemon into your cup. I wish Lipton or Tapal would introduce Orange scented green tea here - it works so much better than Lemon.

Bridal fashion is a bit of a balancing act. Combining creativity, luxury and tradition into a striking statement is an art. The best bridal fashion week collections display originality and craftsmanship. They play with structure and silhouette in a way that enhances embellishment. Like all the best fashion collections, they have something to say and they say it with style.
