Sanam Saeed and Sanam Jung - Double Act

At their best, Pakistani Drama serials offer some of the most compelling viewing on TV. They combine deeply nuanced storylines and dialogue, skilled direction and some truly superb acting. With storylines tackling issues such as child marriage, domestic violence, extra-marital affairs and dowry as well as more light-hearted romances and comedies, Pakistani TV has undergone a renaissance in recent years. For every good serial there is a stereotypical drama that falls far short of the mark, but the television industry as whole has undergone a renaissance that is attracting some very talented actors.

Sanam Saeed and Sanam Jang - Pakistani TV actresses
Ingenue Jung prefers the spontaneity of hosting and finds constant retakes a chore. Saeed, in contrast, is more passionate about acting in all its forms and likes rehearsing so that she can add layers of complexity to her characters.

Deepak Perwani Spring 2014 - PFDC Sunsilk Fashion Week

Deepak Perwani's PSFW 2014 collection was an extension of his "Tres Chic" collection from FPW in February. Featuring similar cuts and silhouettes, Perwani showed an elegant resort-style collection based on quirky London prints. Perwani has always been a favourite amongst Karachi's congnoscenti for western wear although his recent ramp collections haven't included his glamorous dresses. Featuring trendy monochrome, sensual cuts and a pared down chic this was an elegant collection that showed Perwani is as adept at western silhouettes as he is with Eastern ones.

Simple Steps to Yoga Bliss

Balance your mind, learn to relax, enhance your physical, spiritual and emotional wellbeing with yoga. Salma Mian is one of Karachi’s most trusted Yoga teachers. She trained with Sir Wajahat and went on to train further in Sri Lanka with a well-known teacher named Veeda. At the time Veeda was over eighty and yet looked no more than 50. Salma perfected her art in intense one-on-one sessions that would last hours. She continues to upgrade her skills and now offers Hot Yoga after a course in Canada. Salma uses her expertise to guide her pupils, describing each pose in depth, from the breathing to the position of each part of your body.

Muse Spring 2014 collection - at PFDC Sunsilk Fashion Week

There were high expectations from Muse at PFDC Sunsilk Fashion Week 2014. Muse is a label that consistently produces flattering, striking evening wear. This collection, "Foil Wrapped Candy" referenced some key international trends such as metallic fabric and belted evening dresses. It included some remarkable pieces but somehow fell a little flat. One of the key issues was the fall and fit of the metallic fabric, which didn't quite work with the drapey cuts. Nevertheless this was a brave, creative collection and did show sparks of the brilliance Muse is capable of.

Elan at PFDC Sunsilk Fashion Week

Elan by Khadijah Shah is always the one to watch at fashion week. Elan's pop art collection at PFDC Sunsilk Fashion Week was no exception. This was one of the most striking collections of fashion week - glamorous and chic with ecletic detailing. Khadijah Shah goes from strength to strength as a designer. This collection was very different from her 2013 collection in look and yet felt like an extension of her earlier work. Elan does do Eastern wear and does it very well, but this show was not about bread-and-butter fashion. Of all the designers who chose to show western wear, Elan's was the collection that may have looked at home on an international ramp. The collection may have little relevance to the average Pakistani woman but it had the thrill, creativity and drama that make the best Fashion Week spectacles.

PFDC Sunsilk Fashion Week 2014 Round-up: Fantasy or the business of fashion?

PFDC Sunsilk Fashion Week (PSFW) is perhaps the most eagerly anticipated Fashion Week in Pakistan. It regularly attracts a good cross-section of the country’s best designers and shows collections that come to define cutting edge Pakistani fashion for the coming year.

Khaadi Khaas - PFDC Sunsilk Fashion Week 2014 - PSFW

Khaadi Khaas produced one of the most beautiful, covetable collections from fashion week. You could almost hear fashion editors and socialites mentally earmarking pieces for their own wardrobes. Whimsical, ethereal and simply drop-dead gorgeous, the collection was a delicious fusion of baroque florals and elegant creams and beiges. The outfits were accessorized with stunningly attractive box handbags that had the FROW drooling.

Karma Pink at PFDC Sunsilk Fashion Week 2014 - PSFW - Rajasthani Kahani

Karma showed a collection from its Karma Pink brand at PFDC Sunsilk Fashion Week this year. Karma Pink is Maheen Kardarali's retail pret brand and has always had a strong wedding wear line - in fact it's one of those places you always head with out-of-towners for last-minute wedding wear. Karma Pink's signature wedding wear features vibrant colours, kamdani and gota. This collection was entitled "Karma ki Rajasthani Kahani" and was a step above Karma Pink's usual wedding fare.

Shehla Chatoor Samsara collection - PFDC Sunsilk Fashion Week Spring 2014

Shehla Chatoor's spring 2014 collection, Samasara, is everything you expect from Shehla - glamorous, sensual and exquisite. Drawing inspiration from the Orient, Shehla created complex prints which she then used on everything from saris to trenchcoats. In contrast to her last PSFW collection, Samsara had a distinct rock chick feel to it, featuring gold studded pants and detailing. The collection was a true fusion of East and West, featuring gowns, saris, capes and simple dupattas. One of the most alluring collections of PSFW 2014.

Arsalan Iqbal at PFDC Sunsilk Fashion Week - Spring 2014

The House of Arsalan Iqbal showed a predominantly white collection that was notable for its unisex separates and for experimenting with the humble shalwar. Using crisp cottons and flowing cotton jersey, the "Cargwar" collection used rivets and quilting for detail and showcased a wide range of lowers.

First look: PFDC Sunsilk Fashion Week lineup PSFW 2014

So the line-up is out for PFDC Sunsilk Fashion Week and, as expected, includes some of the top names in Pakistani fashion. I'm looking forward to so many - especially Elan, Shehla Chatoor, Rizwan Beyg, Nida Azwer, Sania Maskatiya and Zara Shahjahan. Newbies Saira Shakira have drawn a tough spot following Rizwan Beyg and Zara Shahjahan but they have the potential to live up to the billing. Kudos to HSY, Nida Azwer, Fahad Hussayn, Ali Xeeshan and Deepak Perwani for managing to show at both Fashion Pakistan Week and PFDC Sunsilk Fashion Week.

I'm still not convinced of the value of the afternoon shows. I can see the case for giving a platform to High Street brands but I'm not sure what Textile mills that only sell unstitched fabric bring to the table.

There are also some notable absentees. Some like Shamaeel Ansari always prefer to show at FPW but there are several prominent designers who have skipped both fashion weeks. No Sana Safinaz, Sublime by Sara Shahid, Faiza Samee, Layla Chatoor, Maheen Karim or Misha Lakhani. Misha's excused because she's just had a baby but it would have been nice to see the others show a pret collection this year.

Nevertheless, it's an exciting line-up. Karachista's been a little fashion-centric for the last few weeks but you'll have to bear with us - it's Fashion Week!

IT’S THAT TIME OF YEAR!

Lawn season (read: madness) is upon us again. Who knew that behind the gorgeous designer lawn billboards are tales of freezing rainforests, lizards and swallowed contact lenses?!

This article was first published in the Daily Times Sunday magazine on March 9th 2014. For those of you looking for lawn catalogues, we've added links wherever available.

Adnan Pardesy - Fashion Pakistan Week 6 - Spring 2014

Cool and creative, Adnan Pardesy's Eximius collection for Fashion Pakistan Week was truly inspired. Weaving the golden lace used for gota work into a fabric, Pardesy showed a range of jackets, dresses and pants crafted from this unique fabric. The stiffness of the fabric presented technical challenges that Pardesy handled admirably, apart from on a couple of outfits where the fit was slightly off.  Structured separates in the golden fabric were elegantly paired with flowing ivory pieces. Pardesy also used similar woven fabric in bronze, red and antique silver - again pairing the stiffer woven fabric with flowing fabrics for a look that was attractive and original.

Zainab Chottani - Fashion Pakistan Week 6 - Spring 2014

For Zainab Chottani, Spring 2014 is all about vibrant colours paired with chic monochrome. Chottani took a strong, trendy concept and executed it well - pairing multi-coloured embroidery and monochrome with popping orange, cobalt and bright green. A solid performance from Chottani who has quietly been making a name for herself - although the collection perhaps lacked the freshness of vision needed to make it truly outstanding.
