This year's fashion stars - the people who set the pace for Pakistani fashion in 2013

Sania Maskatiya

2013 Pakistani Fashion Stars- Sania Maskatiya
Sania Maskatiya

She was the only one to show entirely new collections at both Fashion Pakistan Week and PFDC Sunsilk Fashion Week (PSFW). Her bridal collection at PFDC L’Oreal Bridal Week (PLBW) was one of the most experimental and innovative. Currently one of the most creative Pakistani designers, she has spearheaded the change to a more tapered silhouette for Eastern wear. Sania’s core strength is her textile background but she also shows a flair for cut and design. Her lawn for Sapphire Textiles was one of this year’s most popular designer lawn collections. She has also taken her collections abroad to various international desi fashion shows. This year saw two new Sania Maskatiya retail outlets, one in Lahore and one in Dolmen Mall, Clifton. Her Karachi flagship store in Defence, despite having a huge display space, almost feels too small to house all the designs Sania has to show at any one time. In terms of energy, business sense, creativity and sheer talent Sania is one of fashion’s frontrunners in 2013.

Crafter's Expo and the British Women's Association Christmas Fair - so many goodies in one day!

Isn't it always the way? There's nothing on for weeks and then two fabulous events clash and you have to dash from one to the other or decide which one to miss. A couple of weeks ago on Sunday 15th December, craft loving Karachi-ites faced just this dilemma. In this case missing one of the events was unthinkable. The annual Crafter's Expo was held at the Royal Rodale Club while The British Women's Association Christmas Fair took place at the Beach Luxury Hotel.

Top tips for surviving the wedding season

Pakistani Wedding season survival tips

December in Pakistan can mean only one thing – Wedding Season: a never-ending string of dholkis, mayyuns, mehndhis, nikkahs, baraats and valimas. Even if you love the colour and drama of big fat Pakistani weddings, the sheer scale of the winter marital marathon is exhausting.

Dhoom 3 Review - 5 things to love and hate about the Bollywood blockbuster

5 things to love about Dhoom 3

1. Aamir Khan

He is simply awesome in this film. The film perks up whenever he is on-screen. His sexy pumped avatar, his screen presence and his sheer range as an actor make the film worthwhile.

7up Chef's Bonanza adds some fizz to winter

Chef Fazil -- 7up Chefs Bonanza Pakistani fine dining festival
7up Chef's Bonanza brought international chefs such as Malaysian Fazil Shahreen Bin Ahmad to Pakistan
Foodies in Pakistan have been enjoying a treat this winter. The soft-drink brand 7up has sponsored a nationwide food festival, the 7-up Chef’s Bonanza, flying in international chefs to cook at restaurants in Karachi, Islamabad and Karachi. None of the chefs participating in the event are run of the mill chefs or mere line cooks. They are executive chefs and head chefs with global experience managing and opening restaurants. During this 25-day celebration of great cuisine they are taking over some of Pakistan’s best restaurants. Places like Fuschia in Karachi and The Polo Lounge in Lahore are hosting evenings where these experienced international chefs offer a unique gastronomic experience.

Day 2 of Pakistan's other Bridal Fashion Week PBCW- Pantene Bridal Couture Week 2013

Pakistani Bridal Fashion's other fashion week - all the pictures from Day 1 of Pantene Bridal Couture Week 2013 Lahore

I was not in Lahore for this show and the livestreaming was patchy so I'm not doing a proper review. Still, it's great to see the pictures - as you can see it was the usual mix of the good, the bad and the ugly. According to twitter and friends on the ground, highlights from Day 1 included Ammar Shahid, Fahad Hussayn, Deepak Perwani, Ayesha Somaya and Nida Azwer.

Bonanza makes a play for the big-time with Satrangi

Stunning winter ad campaign by NKF films and Maha Burney takes the brand's image to new heights

Maha Burney and NFK films ad campaign for Bonanza Satrangi Winter 2013
This purpose-built set was conceptualised by Maha Burney and designed by Amina & Anisa Rashid Khan
Bonanza has just launched their Satrangi winter collection and boy, have they done it in style. An uber-stylish shoot and TV commercial by NFK films, styled by Maha Burney, announces that Bonanza is upping the ante. Smaller players like Fifth Avenue and Crossroads may rely on dull shoots of models in coats but Bonanza has shown that their winter gear can make a very chic style statement.

Review: Gori Tere Pyar Mein - Lacklustre at best

Review Gori Tere Pyar Mein - Kareena Kapoor & Imran Khan
Gori Tere Pyar Mein could have been a much better film
One thing is certain – the combination of Imran Khan and director Punit Malhotra is like a lead balloon. Their attempts at rom-coms are enough to make anyone “hate luv stories”. A Bollywood romantic comedy is deceptively simple. Songs, dances and a few laughs frame a basic formula - boy meets girl, kahani mein twist, love conquers all. Gori Tere Pyar Mein is a classic example of how to get it wrong.

The Ram-Leela Style guide

The film Ram Leela may have its faults but style-wise it’s a winner. Designer Anju Modi has created some wonderful costumes and the film is full of inspiration for fashion lovers.
Deepika Padukone - Ram Leela Style guide
Add some desi-girl vibrancy to your wardrobe this season
1. The gaghra-choli
The decision to dress Deepika entirely in gaghra-cholis may have been based on authenticity but, all of a sudden, the Gujrati signature costume has never seemed more desirable. Our tailors, bodies and sensibilities may not be able to cope with the sexy, backless cholis Leela wears in the movie but, with less revealing blouses, this is a trend that is going to have wings. Expect to see multiple versions of the lengha-choli at every wedding for the forseeable future.

Ram Leela Review - Bollywood movie by Sanjay Leela Bhansali

Ram Leela is the story of two lovers from feuding Gujarati clans. Played by Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone, Ram and Leela are a sensual, audacious, 21st century version of Romeo and Juliet.

Shamaeel Ansari - the unsung doyenne of Pakistani fashion

Shamaeel Ansari - Pakistani fashion designer
Shamaeel Ansari is known for her silhouettes, detailing and craftsmanship.
Elegant, cosmopolitan and oh-so-pretty – Shamaeel Ansari’s designer wear is a class apart. Despite being one of the pioneers of Pakistani fashion, Ansari is a relatively unsung hero. Her exquisite pieces wow at Fashion Weeks but are perceived as not being widely available. While relatively new designers are forging ahead with retail outlets and multiple lines, the Shamaeel brand has taken a more low profile route. This has led some to believe that designing is merely a hobby for Ansari and that she is not serious about the business of fashion. Nothing could be further from the truth.

The 5 best Cafes in Karachi

coffee at bulters - The 5 best cafes in Karachi
Karachi's cafes offer more than just great coffee
In Karachi, the distinction between a café and a restaurant becomes a little blurred. In general, a café has a more relaxed atmosphere and a simpler menu than a restaurant.  Restaurants are generally somewhat more formal and tend to focus on full meals. The casual environment of a café is suitable for meetings and for hanging out. Cafes generally offer light snacks and desserts along with hot & cold drinks. That said, it’s seems that Karachi-ites like to have fairly substantial items on cafe menus so the distinction ends up being more about ambience, size and atmosphere.

Karachi has some great cafés. They invariably serve breakfast too because we Karachi-ites love our café breakfasts. Cafés in Karachi tend to introduce extensive breakfast menus or disappear without a trace. These are Karachista’s top five cafes.

What reminds you of the UK whilst in Pakistan?

My winning entry to the blogging competition held by the British High commission in Islamabad.
Karachi
Karachi is a sprawling mixture of old and new
On the face of it there seems to be little in scorching Karachi to remind anyone of Britain apart from some oft-neglected architecture. The British Raj that built some of Pakistan’s finest old buildings may be long gone, but it has left isolated bastions of British-ness in the clubs formed by long-gone expats. The steamed puddings at Karachi Boat Club can transport me straight back to my school days in London while the wooden-paneled staircases of Sindh Club remind me of my days at Oxford.

Styling 101 - add panache and personality to the way you dress with some simple styling tips

It’s not what you wear, it’s how you wear it. Style is not just about beautiful clothes. The prettiest outfits can look simply awful if they are styled badly. Vidya Balan in this lovely Sabyasachi Mukherjee jora at the Cannes film festival is a prime example.

The perfect Dinner Party Gift

It’s considered impolite to turn up empty-handed to a dinner party but a hostess gift shouldn’t be the result of a last-minute dash to a florist or bakery.

Whether it's a posh dinner party or a casual affair, the hosts will have worked on the ambience

Sowing the seeds for Peace between India & Pakistan

The Exchange for Change program aims to change attitudes in India and Pakistan at the grass roots level

Exchange for Change, Citizens Archive Pakistan, Karachi Exhibition
Visitors to the Citizen's Archive Pakistan Exchange for Change exhibition at Frere Hall
Peace between India and Pakistan occasionally appears within reach but more often seems nothing more than a fool’s pipe dream. There is so much ugly history and distrust between our two nations that it’s difficult to imagine the situation changing. It’s easy to bemoan the situation but some bright souls are actually spearheading initiatives like Exchange for Change to make peace more likely.

Extravagant birthday bashes highlight a culture of excess

The invitation was a cupcake inside a floral china teacup with a little golden spoon. The momento for guests to take home was a little jewellery box. The décor included little chandeliers and vintage Victorian-themed accessories. The affair had all the trappings of a major celebration except this wasn’t a wedding or coming of age party. This was a little girl’s birthday party in Karachi.

PLBW 2013 - Is it really Fashion? - Bridal Fashion Week in Pakistan

Does bridal wear merit a fashion week? The best bridals are essentially timeless whereas fashion weeks should be about trendsetting, innovation and artistic vision.
PLBW 2013 - Pakistani Bridal Wear - HSY
HSY opened PLBW with a classic collection
There’s no doubt that there are trends in bridal wear — long shirts versus short, farshis versus lenghas, deep colours versus pale and much more. Beyond this, times have changed. Bridal joras no longer need to overpower the brides, and brides no longer hide under heavy dupattas. They want to make a statement with their joras and enjoy being the centre of attention. Every bride wants to look unique and dreams of a jora that reflects her personality.

Kamiar Rokni wows with his Orientalist collection
The third and final day of PLBW was by far the best – a super line-up and collections that lived up to the billing for the most part. Nomi Ansari provided the masala, Sana Safinaz the sophistication and Kami delivered an artistic showpiece that brought this fashion week to a spectacular end.

Day 2 of PLBW was perhaps the weakest day of fashion week with a mixed bag of collections. Misha Lakhani was by far the best although both Fahad Hussayn and Ali Xeeshan showed some great pieces and would both have fared better if they had chosen to show fewer pieces.

Wise up on inflation - coping with austerity in Pakistan

It’s time to get smart about austerity. You’ve seen the plunging rupee and headlining inflation figures on the news but more than that you will have felt the pressure on your pocket. Whether you’re a member of the Birkin brigade or a low-paid blue-collar worker, you will be aware that money simply doesn’t stretch as far as it used to.

PFDC L’Oreal Bridal Week opened with a very strong lineup on Day 1, with HSY, Elan and Sania Maskatiya headlining the show. Despite lackadaisical timekeeping sapping some of the energy of the evening, overall it was an impressive start to fashion week. The amount of individuality on the ramp was inspiring, as designers displayed very different spins on bridal couture.

The best of Pakistani Fashion at the TDAP fashion show

Pakistani Fashion designer rizwan beyg's truck art collection
Rizwan Beyg's famous take on truck art
The Trade & Development Authority Pakistan’s fashion show is usually little more than a blip on the fashion calendar. It was always a little-regarded adjunct to the annual EXPO, conscripted to add a little glamour to the proceedings but with a patchy or second-rate lineup. This year things were a little different. Some of the biggest names in Pakistani fashion came together to show on the platform. While the exercise may not have resulted in many concrete sales, it was a great advertisement for the best of Pakistani fashion.

Motherhood Taboo: Post-Natal Depression

Post Natal Depression is rarely acknowdged in Pakistan despite affecting large numbers of new mothers
New motherhood is no picnic. The indignity of childbirth, stitches in unmentionable places, the physical marathon of labour, the month-long bleeding and more. It doesn’t matter how easy your pregnancy was or how much you wanted a baby, the reality of motherhood usually comes as a bit of a shock.

It seems there is no limit to flagrant brand identity theft in Pakistan. Model Saima Chinoy spotted this billboard in Islamabad recently. Pakistani Fashion loses touch with its roots

On the lookout for a traditional luxury pret outfit? Finding something exceptional might be tougher than you’d expect
Deepak Perwani on Karachista
Headline designers need to channel more of their creativity into Eastern outfits.       Photo: Faisal Farooqui
With our headline designers concentrating on Western and fusion pret, finding the perfect traditional jora in the luxury pret range can be a challenge. Earlier this year, some of our top designers showcased their pret collections at Fashion Pakistan Week and PFDC Sunsilk Fashion Week. There was some fabulous cutting-edge fashion on display but a disproportionate amount of it was Western or fusion. Eastern wear needs the shake-up of cuts and concepts and redefinition of silhouettes and techniques that creative designers can spearhead. It’s an area that too many of our best designers are neglecting.

Fall in love with Bilal Khan all over again with his new song Dou Gharee. Upbeat and romantic, Dou Gharee is a world away from the raw tormented ballads that launched Bilal Khan as a pop sensation. However, unlike his some of his subsequent songs, Dou Gharee has the same soulful vibe that characterizes previous hits “Lamha” and “To Kiya Hua”.
